The Y Window System
The Y Window System is intended to be a successor to, naturally enough, the X Window System. Why do we need another window system? Well, X is getting a little "long in the tooth" and, well, why not?
The naming is consistent with past events: X was successor in name and concept to the W Window System. W was developed at Stanford and originally ran under the V operating system. So will Z be the name of another window system or operating system? Oops, too late. I forgot that IBM already has a Z operating system (aka z/OS).
