Alice

Alice is an environment for building and programming 3D worlds. It's primarily targeted at kids but the rest of us can have fun too. My son and I have spent some time exploring and he's really eager to build some projects in Alice.

Alice is open source. It's primarily written in Java using Swing. There's some native code used for 3D rendering. Currently Alice is Windows only. Ports to OS X and Linux are at the proof-of-concept stage.
