New phone

We decided to get local cellphone numbers before the new school year starts (Goodbye Area Code 781). We also upgraded both of our phones to the Treo 755p. It's a nice improvement over my Treo 650: EVDO. More memory. Much better bluetooth support. Nothing revolutionary but a nicer device.

This is my fourth Treo phone and seventh Palm/Handspring device. And possibly my last unless Palm starts innovating again. The 755p is lighter and slightly smaller than the 650 but still a bit thick compared to many competitors. PalmOS has small incremental improvements but is mostly unchanged in years.

Why didn't I go for something more innovative such as the iPhone? Clearly the iPhone is cooler but currently doesn't do everything my Treo does. I'll wait a generation or two. Plus I got a good deal on the Treos. The two phones cost quite a bit less than one iPhone.

Jonathan Schwartz spins the wheel again

In the latest spin of the Sun Corporate Strategy wheel, CEO Jonathan Schwartz has decided to change Sun's stock ticker symbol from SUNW to JAVA. WTF?

Fake Steve Jobs reaction to this change is hilarious It's official: My Little Pony has lost his mind.

Update: Another funny FSB post about Jonathan Schwartz. Best part is at the end:
Also, please disregard those rumors that the Sun board is interviewing possible replacements for me. Not true. Nobody in their right mind wants this job. Neither does Scott.
Sounds about right. And really sad too. Sun was such a great company.

Project Zero

I'd never heard of Project Zero before reading Mark Pilgrim's blog post Project Zero FAQ FAQ. It's a typical sarcastic Mark Pilgrim post but in an odd way it piqued my interest.

After watching the Project Zero demo, I'm not inspired to learn more. First, a software project that promises Zero complexity. Zero overhead. Zero obstacles? Zero? I need to learn PHP and/or Groovy? I have to edit config files? Meh.

The self-described head honchos are very capable guys but they were also primarily responsible for Websphere which seems to me to be the antithesis of Project Zero's stated goals.

Reducing complexity, embracing scripting languages and all of the other aspects of the New Reality that head honcho Jerry Cuomo lists on his blog are all good things. But a lot of other projects, open source, community source or otherwise have a pretty big head start on Project Zero. And they don't suffer from having a Really Dumb Project Name.

Numbers and the Next Big Thing

Paul Kim is diappointed that Apple's new Numbers spreadsheet isn't multi-dimensional like Lotus Improv. I had the same thought as I watched the demo. But this is a 1.0 release. It'll be interesting to see where Apple takes it from here.

Finally

My parents are visiting this week. My Dad loves getting involved with projects around the house so we've been cleaning out and organizing our garage. Today, for the first time ever, we were able to park both of our cars in the garage. Thanks Dad!

That might not seem like much but organizing the space in this house has been more challenging than our last home in Massachusetts. In that house we had a full basement and plenty of attic space. Our new house is larger but with less storage space. No basement and a tiny attic. Besides a large shed in the backyard, the only real storage space is in the garage.

After giving away things we didn't need to Goodwill and selling a few large items on Craigslist, everything fits. Now we'll see how hard it will be to keep it that way.

Make a Glowing Tomato

Make a Glowing Tomato using matchheads, bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Looks pretty cool. I wonder if you'd get roughly the same effect by injecting a tomato with the liquid from a light stick?

Fake Steve Jobs Unmasked

Brad Stone of the New York Times revealed the identity of the author of the Fake Steve Jobs blog. It's Daniel Lyons, a senior editor at Forbes. Mystery solved. Too bad. I wish Brad Stone had left well enough alone and kept it to himself.

Update: Fake Steve Jobs blog posts are continuing. Nice.
